This program is designed for those who want to make rapid progress in Modern Greek language and deepen their knowledge of Greece and its culture. It offers an intensive language course for beginner, intermediate and advanced level. The course is 40 hours, divided into 10 days, and includes grammar, reading, speaking, and writing. It also provides an insight into Greek culture and civilization. Special courses of Modern Greek Literature and Culture and of Ancient Greek are offered under request. Our Greek teachers are qualified, specialized and experienced in teaching Greek as a foreign language. The course is combined with lectures, outdoor activities and various tours helping students become more familiar with contemporary Greek culture.

This summer “We Learn Modern Greek”  in Methoni, in the South West Peloponnese. We will discover the fascinating small town of Methoni with the uncontaminated beaches, the impressive Venetian Castle and other important monuments, the gastronomy, nature, music and culture of one of the most beautiful places in Greece. Enjoy a cultural vacation of great value in this unique site treating yourself something special: learning the modern or ancient Greek language. From Methoni it will be possible to take one day trips to the island of Sapientza, Olympia, the temple of Apollo in Bassai, Nestor’s Palace, the Mycenaean tombs of Pylos, , the Ancient Messene and  other fantastic destinations.


The lessons will be held in the public school of Methoni and classes, from Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 13:00. The weekend is dedicated to various cultural activities (optional). It is up to the Alexandria Institute to make changes in the schedule or the location of the lessons if necessary.

• Sunday, August 04, 2019. Arrival in Methoni and check in.

• Monday, August 05 – Friday, August 9 and Monday, August 12 – Friday, August 16, from 9:00 to 13:00: Lessons.

• Friday, August 16, 2019. Graduation with representatives of Alexandria Institute and Greek local authorities.

• Saturday, August 17, 2019. Departure from Methoni and see you next year! It is possible to extent your studies for one or two weeks.


Alexandria Institute offers intensive courses of Modern Greek language and Culture for beginners, intermediate and advanced level students.

At the end of the seminar, participants are expected to have acquired the skills to: Use everyday vocabulary as well as some basic phrases to communicate. Introduce themselves and be able to ask and answer questions about each others (e.g. where they live, people they know, things they own). Interact in a basic way, provided that the co-speaker uses a clear and slow speech.

(Modern Greek for those with a basic knowledge of the language.) At the end of the seminar, participants are expected to have acquired the skills to: Understand the main points of a clear standard input on common matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure etc. Deal with a variety of situations which are likely to arise while travelling in Greek-speaking countries. Produce a simple, consistent text on everyday topics or on personal interest. Describe events, experiences, dreams, hopes, ambitions. Provide arguments and explain own opinion and plans.

(Modern Greek for students who have a solid knowledge of Greek.) At the end of the seminar, participants are expected to have acquired the skills to: Understand the main ideas of a complex text on both practical and abstract topics. Interact fluently and spontaneously with native speakers. Produce a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects. Explain own point of view on complex issues (stating advantages and disadvantages on a variety of topics).

In addition to the general courses, the following special courses are offered:

Literature and Culture course
The aim of this course is to give a thorough insight into Modern Greek literature, history, art, traditions and other aspects of Greek culture. Good knowledge of the language (advanced level) and extended vocabulary is required.

Ancient Greek Language course
For ancient Greek language students who want to deepen their knowledge of the ancient Greek literature and/or ancient Greek grammar and morphology of the language


The program will be held at Methoni’s public school.



The prefecture of Messinia has been inhabited for thousands of years, therefore it is disseminated with a great variety of remains of different ages and classical, byzantine and modern witnesses. Monuments and cultural inheritance of Messinia, in combination with the beautiful landscape that surrounds them, create a magic atmosphere that captures even the most demanding visitor.


Beaches close to Methoni and around the prefecture of Messinia are countless and satisfy every taste. White sand, big pebbles or steep rocks, all forms coexist side by side and make Messinia a haven for sea lovers. The magnificent Messinian Bay washes one side, while the other one lies on the turquoise Ionian waters.

The course is organized by Alexandria Institute (Athens) with the collaboration of Arethas Institute (Athens) for Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Projects. The course in Methoni was originally projected and organized from 2002 to 2012 by Meduproject s.r.L. and it’s director prof. Andrea Nanetti with the collaboration of Arethas Institute (Athens) for Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Projects and the Centre for History and Palaeography of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece under the auspices of the Faculty of Preservation of Cultural Heritage of Bologna (Ravenna) and the Faculty of Arts, University of Rome «Tor Vergata».

• The course: 40 hours of lessons divided into 10 days taught by native teachers with experience in teaching Greek as a foreign/second language. That is 5 + 5 days of lessons with a break of 2 days dedicated to excursions and various cultural activities (optional).

• All teaching material (books, photocopies, CD).

• Accommodation for 13 nights in  hotel Castello in the centre of Methoni (double room shared with another student with out breakfast, air-conditioning, telephone,  fridge, view to the castle and the village, TV).

• A dinner at the end of the course in a typical Greek tavern.



If you wish to have your own room there is a supplementary charge. There is also an extra fee if you wish to share a double room with a friend or a relative who doesn’t want to attend the courses.

Those without the possibility of staying in Greece for 2 weeks can choose a 1 WEEK COURSE, being the first week of every 2-week intensive course (day 1 till day 7, check in Sunday, check out Sunday). Please indicate the one week package type you desire (beginners, intermediate, advanced). The one week courses take place during the following dates:

• The course: 20 hours of lessons divided into 5 days taught by native teachers with experience in teaching Greek as a foreign/second language. After the 5 days of tuition there is one free day dedicated to various cultural activities and excursions (optional).

• All teaching material (books, photocopies, CD).

• Accommodation for 7 nights in hotel Castello in the centre of Methoni (single room  with air-conditioning, telephone, fridge, view to the castle and the village, TV, breakfast not included).


ONLY TUITION: For students who desire to attend the course without the accommodation offered above, the fee for the TWO WEEK COURSE is 590 EURO and for the ONE WEEK COURSE is 390 EURO.



Students who wish to continue their studies in Greek language and culture have the possibility to continue for one or two more weeks.



For friends or couples who wish to attend the TWO WEEK COURSE there is a 10% discount off 10% tuition fees.  Group enrolments (3 or more participants) of the same level have a discount of 15%. Returning students have also a discount of 10% in the tuition fee.


Teachers are also available to organize dinners, small boat trips and excursions with the students (the costs of which is paid by the students). Our teachers will be available to accompany and guide you in the most historical and characteristic places in the area of Messinia. The minimum cost per person is 20 € and a minimum number of 5 persons is required. You can choose one or more of the following excursions.

EXCURSION 1: Ancient Messene, Temple of Apollo in Basai.

EXCURSION 2: Pylos, Gialova, Nestor’s Palace and Voidokilia beach.

EXCURSION 3: Finikounta, Tsampi beach and Koroni.

EXCURSION 4: Boat trip in the Navarino bay and visit in the historic island of Sfaktiria.

EXCURSION 5: Ancient Olympia.
